Dastan-e-Ishq by Ali Zafar
Also known as Dastaan (story), and written by Ali Zafar (singing) and Baqir Abbas (on flute). This song includes several lines by famous Sufi poets from Punjab, and references to the romantic legend of Heer Ranjha. Another great song from Coke Studio (Season 2, Episode 2, broadcast June 28, 2009). Thanks to Faiz and others who helped with the translation. In Punjabi with English translation.
Free downloads are available on the Coke Studio website.

Dale: great work
ReplyDeleteVery nice work. Minor comment: the taana/baana metaphor translates best to warp and woof.
ReplyDeleteThanks Sanjay. I knew that tana/bana translates perfectly to warp/weft (or warp/woof), but wondered if the average person would understand. This is a good example of the challenges of developing good translations most people will understand. I asked a few people with good English vocabularies if they understood "You are my warp, you are my weft," in the context of the speaker using examples of how someone is everything to them; but no one understood the terms. (After explaining the terms refer to weaving, some said they might have remembered the meaning in that context). So I decided to use "lengthwise threads/crosswise threads," but I never liked how awkward that was. I've now changed it to "You are my warp, you are my weft (threads)." Thanks for helping me realize now that a short parenthetical is a better way to help make it clear.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the translation..my eyes wunt have watered without reading translation!
