Jal Pari (Mermaid) by Atif Aslam

Jal Pari by Atif Aslam is a great song; it sounds like a catchy pop song about mermaids as sirens of the sea, or a love song, and is essentially a spiritual song. But even if you were cynical, unromantic, and an atheist; you still might enjoy it as a story about the obsessive nature of love or superstition. Near the end, the song segues into a rendition of Tu Mera Dil Tu Meri Jaan previously recorded by Nasrat Fateh Ali Khan (thanks to Ricky Singh for pointing that out and translating it). From Coke Studio (Season 2, Episode 1, broadcast June 14, 2009). In Punjabi with English translation.

Free downloads are available on the Coke Studio website.

    (let me take a rest…)

    lehron mein kahin..
    (somewhere in these waves…)
    doob jaane do…
    (…let me drown…)

    lehron mein kahin..
    (somewhere in these waves…)
    doob jaane do…
    (…let me drown…)

    mujhse kahe…. ik jalpari…
    (says to me… a mermaid…)
doob jaane do… jal mein kahin…
(let me drown… in these waters…)
    aa…

so jaane do… chhup jaane do
(let me sleep… let me hide in there…)
lehron mein kahin, doob jaane do
(in these waves somewhere, let me drown…)

    shor na karo yaaro
    (please don’t raise a din, friends…)
    aankh hai lagi
    (coz I just caught a few winks…)
    behel jaane do yaar
(let me get lost in here…)
    jal mein kahin
    (in these waters…)
    jal mein kahin
    (in these waters…)

    jal mein kahin
    jal mein kahin

    Moray piya… aa… re… re…
    (my beloved… come…)
    Moray piya…
    Piya… Piya… Piya….
    (my love… my love… my love…)

    Moray Piya… kehta jiya…
    (my dear… the hear asks-… )
    tu hai kahaan…
    (where are you…)
    main hun yahaan…
    (as I am waiting here…)
    jal mein kahin…
    (in these waters)
    jal mein kahin…
    (in these waters)

    jal mein kahin…
    jal mein kahin…

    ho-aa…

    Moray Piya… re piya re…
    O re piya…
    Piya ghum diya…
(why give me this grief, my love…)
    o re piya…
    re ghum diya…
    piya re piya re…
    Piya re, piya re…

    piya re piya re…
    Piya re, piya re…

    paavein jaan na jaan,
    mainu tere te maan,
    (may you realize or not,
I am proud of you my love…)
    kar layi pachaan,
    tu hain jind te jaan
    (I have recognized you,
    as my heart and soul…)

    paavein jaan na jaan,
    mainu tere te maan,
    kar layi pachaan,
    tu hain jind te jaan

    dil majboor
    (the heart is helpless…)
    mera ki kasoor
    (what’s my fault in that…)
    jaane hazoor
    (for He knows…)
    mere hazoor
    (that you are my God…)

    dil majboor
    mera ki kasoor
    jaane jhazoor
    mere hazoor

    sehni nai judaai
    nahi o kamaayi
    (can’t tolerate this separation,
    it fetches me nothing…)
    jaane khudaayi
    akh tere naal laayi
    (for the whole world knows,
    you are my only treasure…)

    mere sohneya, mere meherbaan
    mere haaniya, mere dil jaaniya
    (my beautiful, my kind one,
my equal in love, my heart’s desire…)

    mere sohneya, mere meherbaan
    mere haaniya, mere dil jaaniya

tu mera dil, tu meri jaan
(you are my heart, you are my life…)
    jaan-e-jaan, meherbaan
(my reason to live, my kind one…)

tu mera dil, tu meri jaan
    jaan-e-jaan, meherbaan

    saahmne tu, baitha ravein
(may you keep sitting in front of me…)
    har wele main, takkdi ravaan
(and may I remain lost gazing at you…)

tu mera dil, tu meri jaan
    jaan-e-jaan…

    jaan-e-jaan…

    o re piya…
    (oh my love…)
    kehta jiya….
    (the heart asks repeatedly…)
    tu hai kahaan…
    (about where you are…)
    main hun yahaan…
    (as it awaits you here…)

    jal mein kahin…
    (in these waters…)
    jal mein kahin…
    (in these waters…)

    jal mein kahin…
    jal mein kahin…

    aa…
    (come to me…)
